This map was made using three pieces of equipment: a laptop running NetStumbler, a handheld Garmin GPS unit attached to the laptop, and a self-designed antenna also attached to the laptop via a wireless networking card. As a signal in the 802.11x range was detected, the laptop recorded the position currently on the GPS unit. The GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude) were then translated into an XML formatted file and loaded via AJAX into the map. The map itself is made possible by the Google Maps API. Each time you load the page, the XML coordinate file is reloaded and the map is redrawn. The practice of mapping access points is commonly known as wardriving.
